Letter from the Chairman
Ladies and gentlemen,
As I step into the role of Chairman of the Williamsburg James City County Republican Committee (WJCCRC), I want to thank Jim Brittain for his steady leadership during a tough gubernatorial cycle. When it counted, this committee showed up. Volunteers knocked doors, wrote post cards, spoke to voters outside voting locations, and kept our candidates moving forward. That teamwork helped elect Tracy Wainwright to the Powhatan Board of Supervisors.
Now we get back to work—and quickly.
In eight weeks, voters will decide more than a referendum. They will decide whether their voices still carry weight. Nearly two-thirds of Virginians voted to amend the Constitution to create a bipartisan redistricting process so communities would shape representation; this was done specifically to avoid allowing politicians to pick their voters and game the system. That commitment to principle is now being tested.
Efforts are underway to go from having sensible boundaries to drawing spaghetti districts to ensure Democrats have ten (10) safe Democratic congressional districts. If that happens, elections could be tilted before a single vote is cast. When districts are engineered for outcomes, rural and suburban voters outside Northern Virginia are pushed aside and neglected.
As Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Jeff Ryer recently wrote, our attention must turn to the existential fight in front of us. The next two months will mean early mornings, long evenings, unanswered calls, and doors that take a second knock. It will take discipline and grit.Saving our Republican and competitive districts is of the utmost importance. Cast aside any old grudges and join the battle for fair maps.I ask you to join me in helping as much and as often as you can over the remaining weeks before and during the special election on Tuesday, April 21 (although I expect most of you will take advantage of early voting beginning on Friday, March 6).Make calls. Knock doors. Write postcards. Give an hour. Bring a friend. Small efforts compound. If we do the work, we protect fair representation for every Virginian.Respectfully,Vincent “Vinny” V. Passero IIIChairman, WJCCRC
